Koans can be practiced by yourself. You just ask yourself the question during the meditation, as if it was a mantra. The most basic question you can start with is “Who am I?”. Just ask on the out breath, listen on the in breath.
Dyads are by definition in pairs. And, the version I know, consists on asking each other the koan, 5 min each.
